This one-week workshop begins with an in-depth analysis of the participants’ portfolios in effort to reveal the common thread in each person’s work. Thatcher Cook will take the information gained from reviewing the individual work and help students begin to see what makes a unique vision. Daily assignments will be provided to help the photographer discover and establish an original personality. The emphasis will be on learning how to create and record mood, color, composition, and content in order to bring more depth to each person’s work. This workshop will be intense and involves readings, slide shows, critiques, and input from all participants. At the end, each student will have a better idea of who they are as a photographer, as well as a constantly evolving written philosophy that can track their personal progress as a storyteller.

Spring in Andalucía is a time of festivities. Villages come alive with fairs, pilgrimages, bullfights and dancing. The countryside is carpeted with wildflowers and the spring light is magical. We will arrive in Jerez during the annual Horse Fair. As students, we will experience the Andaluz culture through its´ ritualistic traditions and colorful festivals capturing images of flamenco dancers, bullfights and the colors of the Feria.
Much of the cultural phenomena we will experience comes from the Moorish occupation of Spain. We will get a chance to make genuine comparisons as we take a step back in time and venture into exotic Morocco and spend time in cities such as Chefchouen and Fez, wandering through the souks and medinas within the city ramparts.
Back in Spain we will have a chance to explore Tarifa, a fishing village on the southern tip of Spain steeped in Visigoth, Moorish and Christian history dating back to the 7th century, before we head back to Sanlucar where we will spend the last part of the workshop documenting the departure of the Pilgrimage to El Rocio. This pilgrimage dates back to the 15th century when a man discovered a miraculous image of the Virgin Mary hidden in a tree whilst he was out hunting. A hermitage was constructed at the site and named it La Virgen del Rocío or Virgin of the Dew. Today over a million people come from all parts of Spain in a 4 day trek through the Coto Doñana National Park to worship the Virgen del Rocio
